How to Report a Collection Agency or Debt Collector for Harassment

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) protects you in several ways. In essence, it shields consumers from abusive collection practices such as offensive language and deceptive communication. Debt collectors cannot lie to you or make your life miserable with harassing or humiliating calls. Thanks to this law, you have control over how and when collectors can contact you.

The FDCPA allows you to limit when and how collectors call you, and it prohibits lies, harassment, threats, and other unfair behavior. All of this sounds great, but in practice some collectors do not always follow the rules—even though they know they should. While these protections exist, they do not always enforce themselves automatically. That’s where we can help.

If you are repeatedly dealing with a collector or agency that is violating the FDCPA, it’s time to take action. You do not have to live with this situation, and they know it. Here are three steps you can take:

#1 Verify that they are actually breaking the law

Before moving forward, make sure the collection agency is truly violating the FDCPA. To better understand what the law allows and what it prohibits, contact Safe Credit Solutions. We understand the regulations and can help you deal with collection harassment.

#2 File a formal complaint

You can submit complaints to:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
The Better Business Bureau (BBB)

You can even report the issue to all three organizations. These institutions protect consumers and promote fair competition by enforcing regulations. The BBB is a nonprofit organization that encourages ethical business practices across many industries, including debt collection agencies.

#3 Contact your state’s Attorney General

The FDCPA is a federal law, but some states have additional rules regarding debt collection. Contact your State Attorney General’s Office to learn about local regulations. If the collector is also violating state laws, you may be able to file an additional complaint there.

If you believe a debt collector is harassing you or treating you unfairly, today is the day to take action. You are not alone. Safe Credit Solutions is on your side. Contact us to learn how we can help you stop the harassment and protect your rights.
